Cargobike of freight bike? What suits your business?

January 1, 2025, is just around the corner. This date is crucial for many businesses, as several cities will no longer allow delivery vans (Euro 6 vehicles will still be permitted until January 1, 2028). This means businesses must start thinking seriously about alternatives. A cargo bike or freight bike can be an excellent solution.

The difference between a freight bike and a cargo bike

The difference between a freight bike and a cargo bike is simple to explain: it’s a translation! In Dutch, both “vrachtfiets” and “cargobike” are used interchangeably, which can sometimes cause confusion. In both cases, we’re referring to a (usually electric) bike designed for transporting goods—unlike the popular cargo bike used by parents to ferry children around.

Which freight bike is ideal for your business?

If you deliver goods or provide services in and around a city center that will fall under the zero-emission zone next year, you’ll need to consider an alternative to your delivery van. A freight bike can be the perfect solution. However, the best choice for your business depends on several factors, such as the distance you travel daily, the size and weight of your goods or tools, and how many employees will use the bike.

Which freight bike for which type of user?

To give you a head start, here are some tips to help you determine which type of cargo bike or freight bike might suit your business:

  • Light goods delivery in urban areas:
If your business is located in the city and you deliver light goods (like small packages or flowers), we recommend exploring Urban Arrow’s two-wheeled freight bikes. These bikes are available with a small box (325 liters) or a larger one (525 liters). We also offer passively cooled boxes (ideal for food items) and tall boxes (perfect for flowers).

  • Long distances or frequent short trips:
If you travel longer distances in one go or make multiple short trips throughout the day, investing in extra batteries can be a game-changer. Feel free to call or email us to figure this out together. Battery range depends on factors like weight, terrain elevation, whether you use maximum assistance, and weather conditions such as headwinds. As a rule of thumb, a 500Wh battery can support you for around 40–50 km.

  • Heavy and bulky goods:
If you’re unsure about the distances you’ll travel but deal with large, heavy goods or tools, Cargo Cycling’s three-wheeled freight bikes might be the ideal solution. With their large boxes and sturdy frames, these bikes can handle any task. Plus, since they are trikes, they stay upright when you dismount—a reassuring feature when carrying heavy loads.
