The Environmental Investment Allowance (MIA) is available to entrepreneurs who invest in sustainable business assets, such as a (refurbished) cargo bike. The purchase value of the cargo bike must exceed €4,000 excluding VAT. The MIA can provide a deduction of up to 45% of the investment amount, in addition to the regular investment allowance. Visit the website of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) for all the rules and requirements.
Opportunities for your cargo bike subsidy
An (electric) cargo bike is slightly more expensive than a regular bike or a bakfiets for taking the kids to school. However, when compared to a delivery van, the costs are surprisingly low. To make the cargo bike an even more attractive alternative to a delivery van, several subsidies have been introduced. Make sure to check which options might apply to you.
Vamil scheme from the tax authorities
The Random Depreciation of Environmental Investments scheme (Vamil) allows you to depreciate up to 75% of the investment costs. Want to know more about this cargo bike subsidy? You can find all the details and benefits of the Vamil on the RVO website.
KIA scheme from the tax authorities
The Small-Scale Investment Deduction (KIA) might also be an interesting option. This scheme offers a tax deduction on your company’s profits, and cargo bikes are eligible. Read more about this beneficial scheme on the Tax Authority’s website.
For all these tax schemes, we recommend consulting your accountant or bookkeeper to determine the exact benefits for your business, as the advantages can vary depending on your situation.
Provincial subsidies
Currently, Overijssel is the only province offering the “Electric Cargo Bike Incentive,” which subsidizes 30% of the purchase price (up to a maximum of €1,500). This cargo bike subsidy can be combined with other tax benefits. We hope more provinces will follow this example or introduce their own subsidies.
Subsidies for foundations and associations
Foundations and associations can regularly find subsidy opportunities through the website Social Handprint. Check the website to see if you might qualify for a contribution toward the cost of a cargo bike.
Logistics broker
Several provinces and larger cities have appointed logistics brokers to assist entrepreneurs in transitioning to emission-free logistics. These brokers are well-informed about available opportunities, including free trial weeks and other initiatives to promote cargo bikes. Search for a logistics broker in your area to find the right contact.
Make the most of your cargo bike subsidy!
We recommend asking your bookkeeper to explore the above options. They know your financial situation best and can advise on how to access additional cargo bike subsidies or deductions. Don’t leave money on the table—make the most of the available opportunities.
